The Appellate Division ordered payment of Tk 2,500 crore owed to three mobile operator companies Grameenphone, Banglalink and Robi. The order also said that the government, National Board of Revenue (NBR) and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) should pay this amount.

A five-judge appellate bench headed by Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui passed the order on Tuesday (January 10) hearing the appeal against the High Court’s order.

In the judgment, Grameenphone was ordered to pay Tk 1,400 crore, Robi Tk 500 crore and Banglalink Tk 650 crore.

Attorney General AM Amin Uddin on behalf of the government, Barrister Reza-e Rakib on behalf of BTRC and Barrister Mostafizur Rahman Khan on behalf of the mobile company heard in the court. Attorney General AM Amin Uddin confirmed the court order.

Earlier, in 2012, a foreign mobile operator company filed a writ in the High Court against the government charging higher VAT-tax. However, those three companies lost the writ.
