A court in the country has sentenced 112 minority Rohingya citizens to prison for trying to leave Myanmar illegally.

It is learned that they were detained from a motor boat without any valid documents in December last year. Rohingyas are mainly residents of Myanmar’s Rakhine State. But no Myanmar government has recognized them as citizens of the country. As a result, the minority Muslim community is also deprived of basic facilities.

Moreover, extreme torture was carried out on them at various times. In 2017, millions of Rohingya fled to Bangladesh to escape persecution by the Myanmar army. However, Rohingyas in Myanmar are kept in camps, where their movements are strictly monitored.

Rohingya living in Myanmar and Bangladesh try to reach Europe in small boats to escape the miserable life. A few days ago, 185 Rohingya who had been floating in the sea for several weeks were rescued off the coast of Indonesia.

According to the High Commissioner of the United Nations Refugee Agency, the tendency of Rohingya citizens to migrate to Europe has increased more than any other time. In 2022, almost six times as many Rohingya attempted to cross dangerous sea routes to other countries than in 2021.
