
Strong earthquake hits New Zealand
Our Islam Desk: A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck northwest of Wellington, New Zealand. The earthquake was initially reported to have a moderate depth of 57.4 km.
The earthquake struck at 7.38 pm local time today, Wednesday. It was centered 50 km northwest of the Paraparaumu region of New Zealand.
New Zealand’s Civil Defense Agency said, ‘A major tremor was felt. 50 km northwest of Paraparaumu. It was widely felt in the North Island with a magnitude of 6.0 and a depth of 57 km.’
There were no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning was issued. The earthquake came just after the devastating Cyclone Gabriel hit New Zealand. Cyclone Gabriel has killed four people and caused widespread damage across the North Island.
