At least 17 people have been killed in anti-government protests in the Latin American country of Peru. Protesters tried to attack an airport in the country on Monday when the security forces clashed with the loss of life.
The new incident of bloodshed occurred due to clashes with security forces in the southeastern city of Juliaca in Peru’s Puno region. An official of the local governor’s office gave this information. An official of the local Kalos Monge Hospital said that the bodies of those killed on Monday in Juliaca had bullet wounds. Monday’s death brings to 34 the number of people killed in the country’s protests and clashes since Castillo’s ouster. The mayor of Juliaca, Oscar Cáceres, appealed to the government for peace. In a statement he said, Peruvians are killing each other. Such a scene is unbearable. I request everyone to remain calm. Basically, Peru has been going through a political crisis for the past month. Former President Pedro Castillo was ousted by impeachment in the first week of December last year.
Castillo sought asylum in Mexico after being ousted by impeachment. But at that time trusted bodyguards prevented him from taking refuge in the Mexican embassy in the capital Lima. Castillo was imprisoned shortly after his ouster. Just a few hours later, Vice President Dina Bolvarte took over as the country’s new president. Since then the country has been in virtual political instability.
